This week all pupils held their very own election and developed their understanding of democracy. This was to decide the school councillor representatives for each class. The children experienced how an election is carried out and the process of a vote. They had to give their class and school name (representation of giving their address) and they then had a ballot paper which needed to be completed in the voting booth. This ballot paper was then folded and put into the ballot box where it could be counted by an external agency – Class 4. The children thoroughly enjoyed this experience and it provided a great opportunity for discussion around the importance of voting for who they wanted to elect, not who their friends wanted to elect.
